We are Good Neighbors

A global movement to make the world a place without hunger, where people live in harmony.

Good Neighbors is an international humanitarian and development organization founded in 1991. For over three decades, we have answered the call of the most marginalized and vulnerable people, beyond ethnicity, religion, belief, and nationality, working to protect their rights and help them become self-reliant.

Good Neighbors uses a community-inclusive strategy that addresses the whole household rather than a single need. We work with over 200 communities worldwide on social and economic development.

Our journey in Kenya

Thirty years of cumulative impact on generations

  1. Good Neighbors staff and families at a scholarship handover

    1995

It began with three children in Korogocho

Good Neighbors began its mission in Kenya focusing on street children in Korogocho, Nairobi’s largest slum. A children’s centre gave those who lacked food and clothing a safe haven, and introduced them first to informal education, then formal schooling.

The initiative started with three children, who were identified, sponsored, and enrolled in a boarding primary school.

  2. A health worker attending to a patient at a Good Neighbors clinic

    1997

Healthcare for those who had none

Good Neighbors Kenya opened a medical clinic, providing healthcare to underprivileged community members and street children. It met an urgent need and built trust in the community.

  3. Community leaders and Good Neighbors staff planting a tree

    2000

    Expanding to Dandora

Operations expanded to Dandora Slum, supporting neighbors affected by hunger, disaster, and oppression. The goal was to improve children’s quality of life and help the community become more resilient and self-reliant.

Core values

Seven values that guide every decision we make.

We are rights-based, child-focused, and guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. These values shape how we choose our work, partner with communities, and account for every shilling entrusted to us.

They are why families trust us to stay long after the first crisis has passed.

  • Serve beyond borders

We serve people in need beyond ethnicity, religion, belief, and nationality.

  • Children first

We implement the rights of the child as our top priority.

  • Global citizenship

We prosper global citizenship in mutual respect.

  • Local volunteers

We organize local volunteers to contribute in developing their own communities.

  • Shared mission

We cooperate with all people who understand our mission and program.

  • Transparency

We work with professionalism, and pursue financial and operational transparency.

  • Growing the movement

We strive to induce more people to join our work as Good Neighbors members.

Mission & vision

“Good Neighbors exists to make the world a place without hunger, where people live together in harmony.”

Good Neighbors respects the human rights of our neighbors suffering from poverty, disaster, and oppression, and helps them to achieve self-reliance and rebuild their hope. In Kenya, that means staying with the most vulnerable children and families for as long as it takes them to become independent.

A rights-based mandate
Guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, we put children’s rights at the center of every programme, including education, protection, health, and clean water.
Accountable to Kenyans
As a registered Public Benefit Organisation, we publish our spending, results, and independent audits for the communities we serve.
